LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers did not need Tarik Skubal to win a third consecutive World Series. They acquired him to make it impossible to lose one.
Los Angeles landed the Detroit Tigers ace Sunday in the defining deal of the 2026 trade deadline, parting with outfield prospect Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan, and 21-year-old Brady Smith for the back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner. The deal makes Skubal only the second pitcher to be dealt in the season following a Cy Young win since R.A. Dickey went from the Mets to the Blue Jays in 2012 – a 14-year gap that speaks to how rarely the sport’s best arms move while they are still its best arms. It ended a three-team pursuit that had the Cubs and Brewers each believing, as recently as Thursday, they were in front. They were not.
Andrew Friedman has run the Dodgers’ front office since 2014, winning three rings, and his deadline philosophy has remained consistent: not plugging deficits, but raising ceilings. Skubal, 29, is a ceiling-raiser at a category most teams never access. Across his two Cy Young campaigns, he posted a 2.30 ERA over 387 innings with a combined 13.1 WAR. Entering Sunday, he carried a 2.79 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 96⅞ innings this season, pitching through arthroscopic elbow surgery that cost him weeks in the spring. The Dodgers entered the trade period as the best team in the National League. They added the arm that makes postseason opponents count whether they can afford to face him twice.
The cost was real. Hope, 21, ranked 36th among all prospects in baseball. Ryan, 27, is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Smith had yet to reach Double-A. Detroit received the kind of package a franchise rebuilding toward 2028 can use. Whether the Tigers extracted fair value for the only genuine elite pitcher on their roster is a debate their fans will carry into the winter.
Skubal came up through the Detroit organization, drafted in the ninth round from Seattle University in 2018 and developed through a rebuild that produced near-misses and a fanbase that watched its franchise arm enter October without them twice. He won the AL Cy Young in 2024, the first Tiger to do so since Denny McLain in 1969, and won it again in 2025. Both seasons, Detroit finished outside the playoffs. Individual excellence in institutional decline: it is the particular agony of small-market development, and it eventually resolves in a trade. Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers had tracked him for months, each believing the Tigers would deal within their division’s competitive picture.
The arrival reshapes the Dodgers’ rotation calculus in ways beyond raw talent. Shohei Ohtani has not thrown a pitch since July 3, when a left knee injury sidelined him from the mound with no recovery timeline publicly specified. The Dodgers were already navigating October without their highest-paid player in his two-way capacity. Skubal takes the weight of being the staff’s decisive arm in elimination games and carries it without qualification.
The scale of the acquisition puts this deadline class in conversation with the Dodgers’ own 2022 and 2023 moves and the 2021 Atlanta Braves, who acquired a rotation anchor at the deadline and won the World Series. The common thread is not talent equivalence but franchise intent: moving real assets – prospect depth, not fringe names – for a pitcher whose October ceiling is undefined.
Both Milwaukee and Chicago were active in pursuit. The Brewers moved to the front of the bidding as recently as Thursday but could not match Los Angeles on the return package. The Cubs, chasing a championship in a rebuilding cycle that has stretched longer than patience allows, fell back when Detroit’s ask clarified and the Dodgers engaged fully, according to CBS Sports.
What no one has answered is the extension question. Skubal enters free agency after this season. A two-time Cy Young winner in his prime, not yet 30, will command an offer that sets a new ceiling for pitcher contracts. Friedman has not publicly addressed extension conversations. The trade contains no reported clause requiring one. The Dodgers are wagering prospect capital on the math being correct: two months of Skubal in a pennant race, a ring if it works, and either an extension or a compensatory pick if it does not.
Detroit’s consolation is that it did not simply watch him walk. The return is not what Tigers fans wanted and is not what Skubal deserved in terms of franchise reciprocity. But it is something. In 2024 and 2025, he gave Detroit two years of the best starting pitching in the American League.
That was worth a standing ovation at Comerica Park, which Detroit gave him during what turned out to be his final start there last week. It turns out they were saying goodbye.
