Defence Stocks Today: Five Fall, One Rises, and Only BDL Draws a Crowd

The businesses are sound and the demand is real. What decides the next move at four of these six companies is a signature, an export licence or a tender, none of which has a published date.

NEW DELHI — Five of India’s six large defence stocks are lower on Tuesday morning. The one that is up is also the only one anybody is trading in size, and that is a more useful description of the sector right now than the direction of the index.

Bharat Dynamics was quoted at ₹1,378.50 on the National Stock Exchange at 11:49 IST, up 0.77 percent, on turnover running at 1.73 times its normal pace. The other five are all lower on turnover at or below normal. Hindustan Aeronautics, down 1.13 percent, is falling on the lightest pace in the group. These are live intraday figures from a session that settles at 15:30, and none of them is a closing price.

What holds the whole group in place is a single structural fact. At four of these six companies, the thing that decides the next move is a decision somebody else has to make, and none of those decisions has a published date.

Live NSE intraday figures at 11:49 IST on August 25, 2026, about 154 minutes into a session that runs to 15:30. Ranges are the session’s high and low so far and can extend either way. Turnover pace compares shares traded so far against the average full-day volume of the past twenty sessions, extrapolated on a straight-line basis; morning trade is normally heavier than afternoon trade, so every figure reads high and should be treated as a ceiling.

Read the last column rather than the third. A spread of 1.17 percentage points between the best and worst performer is unremarkable for this basket. A spread of 0.74 to 1.73 times in turnover is not. Five of these stocks are being left alone; one is being bought.

Compiled by The Eastern Herald from company disclosures and public procurement statements. The Defence Acquisition Council cleared ₹52,000 crore of proposals on July 3, 2026, including medium-range and very short range air defence, but an acceptance of necessity from the Council is an in-principle approval rather than a contract, and the Council is not the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Only one row in that table has a date in it, and it belongs to the company that answers to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways rather than the Ministry of Defence. That is not a coincidence and it is the single most useful organising fact about this sector in August 2026.

Trailing price-to-earnings, return on equity and market capitalisation are Screener’s figures, struck at Monday’s close. The distance from the 52-week high is measured against the live price at 11:49 IST on August 25 and moves with it. Every one of the six is below its twelve-month high.

The ordering is almost exactly inverted between the second and third columns. The two most expensive companies on earnings, Bharat Dynamics and BEML, earn the two lowest returns on equity. The two cheapest, Mazagon Dock and Hindustan Aeronautics, earn the two highest. Whatever the market is pricing in this sector, it is not current profitability.

Where Each One Stands

Bharat Dynamics is in its fourth consecutive session higher, and Tuesday is the first of the four on above-average turnover. It reached ₹1,393.70 in the morning, the highest since August 18, and remains ₹26.10 below the intraday high it printed on results day.

BEML ran to ₹1,977.00, seven rupees short of its August 19 top, and then fell through Monday’s support to ₹1,902.60, printing both the best and the worst price of its last five sessions inside one morning. On 1.84 lakh shares. The free float is thin enough that the tape says more about depth than about anybody’s view.

Bharat Electronics tested ₹405 for the fourth time this month, at ₹405.95, and held. Seven sessions have now traded inside roughly nine rupees. Every one of the five brokerage targets published after its July results sits above the stock’s own 52-week high.

Mazagon Dock broke the bottom of a seven-session range at ₹2,520.00 on turnover pacing at more than twice Monday’s. Its order book fell 11.3 percent in the June quarter, not because it lost anything but because it delivered faster than it replaced.

Cochin Shipyard has run Monday’s session backwards. On Monday it opened at its low and closed at its high; on Tuesday it opened at ₹1,515.00, made ₹1,522.70 in the first minutes and has been going the other way since, on heavier volume than Monday carried.

Hindustan Aeronautics touched ₹4,805.00, within ₹1.60 of the low it printed on results day, August 12. Its opening print and its session high are the same number to within ten paise, which means it has not traded above its first tick all morning, for the second session running.

The Pattern That Repeats From Monday

Distance from the 52-week high against Tuesday’s move
CompanyFrom 52-week highChange so far
Hindustan Aeronautics-5.81%-1.13%
Bharat Electronics-13.74%-0.15%
BEML-15.89%-0.04%
Bharat Dynamics-16.66%+0.77%
Mazagon Dock-17.37%-0.41%
Cochin Shipyard-24.08%-0.71%
Sorted by distance from the twelve-month high, using the live price at 11:49 IST on August 25, 2026. The relationship is not clean, and it is not presented as a rule. It is presented because the same ordering appeared on Monday and it is worth noting when a pattern repeats.

On Monday the stock closest to its high fell the most and the stock furthest from its high rose the most. On Tuesday the top of that table is unchanged, with Hindustan Aeronautics again the heaviest faller, but the bottom has flipped: Cochin Shipyard, Monday’s best performer, is now among the weakest. The pattern is not a mechanism and two sessions is not evidence. What it does suggest is that the money moving in this sector is rotating between names rather than entering or leaving it.

What none of this establishes is when any of the four pending decisions arrives. There is no published date for the Cabinet Committee on Security. GE Aerospace has committed to twenty engines across the second half of the year without breaking that down by month, and August has five trading days left. Project 75I has no tender document in the public domain, and the ₹1 lakh crore figure attached to it comes from industry expectation rather than from anything Mazagon Dock has disclosed. Indian defence procurement has a long record of arriving later and smaller than the first estimate. Until one of these things lands, the sector will keep doing what it did on Tuesday morning, which is move money between six companies whose combined position has not changed.

Elsewhere in the session, Steel Authority of India had traded more than twice a full day’s normal volume by lunchtime and Hindustan Zinc was the market’s steepest faller.

Procurement figures are drawn from the Ministry of Defence statement on the Defence Acquisition Council meeting of July 3, 2026. Intraday prices and scrip identifiers were checked against the BSE’s own quote feed.
