The anchor of Saturday’s grid is 1-Down: MAMDANI. Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race in November 2025, becoming the first Muslim mayor in the city’s history and one of the youngest mayors of a major American city. His campaign centered on housing affordability and public transit expansion. The clue works as a crossword entry because MAMDANI fills seven squares efficiently – but it also works as a cultural marker, the kind of entry that only makes sense in a puzzle published the year after an event lands firmly in public consciousness.
6-Across is GAMES – and the Mini Crossword is itself one. The clue uses Wordle and Scrabble as its examples; both are published by the New York Times. The puzzle names the category that contains it.
