Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law allowing Russian citizens who have Ukrainian nationality to petition the Russian Interior Ministry to renounce this nationality.
The corresponding document was published on the official Internet legal information portal on Saturday.
According to the law, citizens of the Russian Federation with Ukrainian citizenship who sent an application for renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship and did not receive a response will be automatically deprived of Ukrainian citizenship from the date of filing the application to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for waiver.
In addition, from the date of filing an application for refusal to be a citizen of Ukraine, a citizen of the Russian Federation is obliged not to take actions “related to the realization of rights and fulfillment duties foreseen for Ukrainian citizens”. In case of violation of this norm, a conclusion is issued, according to which the application for termination of Ukrainian citizenship is considered invalid. It is possible to reapply with a statement of refusal to be a citizen of Ukraine only after 10 years from the date of recognition of the first application as invalid.
The law comes into force 90 days after its official publication.
Referendums on the entry of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions into Russia were held from September 23 to September 27, 2022.
