Moscow slams Armenia’s accession to ICC Rome Statute as unacceptable

Moscow considers “absolutely unacceptable” Armenia’s plans to join the Rome Statute of the ICC after “illegal warrants” against the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. “Moscow considers absolutely unacceptable the plans of the official city of Yerevan to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in the context of the recent illegal and legally void ‘warrants’ of the ICC against the Russian leadership”, TASS and RIA Novosti quote their source.

Yerevan has already received a warning “about the extremely negative consequences” of such measures for bilateral relations between Armenia and Russia, the source said.

Previously, the Constitutional Court of Armenia had recognized the obligations enshrined in the Rome Statute as corresponding to the fundamental law of the country. President of the Constitutional Court, Arman Dilanyan, said the court’s decision is final and will come into effect upon publication. After that, Parliament must ratify the Rome Statute.

On March 17, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova, accused of illegally removing children from the war zone in Ukraine. . Russian officials have said Moscow does not recognize the ICC and its jurisdiction. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the issuing of warrants “insignificant” and Maria Lvova-Belova stressed that she had not received any calls from Ukrainian authorities about the children taken away.
