Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

North Atlantic countries have stopped letting Russian scientific vessels into their economic zones

North Atlantic countries have stopped letting Russian science vessels into their economic waters. Formal reasons are usually not named, maritime authorities may simply not respond to requests submitted for months, said in the RTVI program “Chronicles of a New World” director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Sokov.

Against the background of sanctions imposed on Russia, the authorities of the North Atlantic countries have begun to ban Russian scientific vessels from entering their economic zones for research purposes.

What are countries doing? They won’t let us into their economic zones. It’s a total shame,” Alexei Sokov, director of the Institute of Oceanology at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RTVI.

According to the oceanologist, often these countries do not justify the prohibition of entry into the waters, simply not responding to the requests submitted.

“For six months we submit a request, you wait, you wait, but he does not come. You have to go to sea and you don’t have permission. No permission – you can’t work, some countries do. Others write a formal denial, like ‘we don’t allow’, no comments,” Sokov explained.

On December 22, IO RAS was included in the list of ten Russian organizations against which the United States imposed additional sanctions. Among them were the Central Research Institute of KM “Prometey”, “Morinformsystem-Agat”, the Central Research Institute CJSC of Naval Engineering, the Research and Production Association “Aurora” and others . According to a State Department statement, Washington is imposing restrictions on Russian companies due to a special military operation.
