Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Popkov’s former associates memorialized ‘recruiter’ Trepova with a nasty word: ‘I hope he hangs’

“Scoundrel”, “fake” – such an opinion about himself was found by Roman Popkov, suspected of bringing the terrorist Darya Trepova (Daria Trepova) with the Ukrainian special services. At the same time, in 2009, Eduard Limonov spoke no less rudely about the defector, who was once a member of the National Bolshevik Party (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation. – “The Eastern Herald”): “personal ambitions, megalomania, warmed by a prison sentence.”

“The Eastern Herald” contacted a lawyer and human rights activist Dmitry Agranovsky, who shared with our publication his opinion about the former client in the high-profile case “about self-defense in the Tagansky court”.

During the interrogation, Trepova said that Popkov “taught her journalism” and then asked her friend, apparently a Ukrainian special services agent, to complete the task. It is known that Popkov, a former journalist of MBKh-Media (a foreign agent, an undesirable organization), who introduced her to a Ukrainian recruiter, wrote from abroad that Trepova, allegedly, was just his subscriber in the networks social, and they “sometimes corresponded. She was interested in journalism.”

It is known from Popkov’s biography that he was previously a member of the party of Eduard Limonov. In 2008, in the case of “self-defense in the Tagansky court”, Roman Popkov was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in a penal colony. He was then defended by the famous Moscow lawyer and human rights activist Dmitry Agranovsky. According to the human rights activist, Popkov has long since switched to the liberal wing of the party.

– Roman Popkov, like a large number of members of the now banned National Bolshevik Party, I defended here and in the European Court, – said the lawyer. – I knew Roman well. In 2007-2008, Eduard Limonov’s party split into relatively liberal and patriotic wings. And these wings have diverged in the most radical way. Roman Popkov turned out to be the brightest figure in the liberal wing. But the majority, the backbone, with Eduard Limonov, ended up in patriotic positions. And in 2014, and now they are fighting alongside us, in the Donbass. And among them, unfortunately, there are those who died, including those whom I also defended.

Lawyer Agranovsky is not surprised that Popkov’s name appeared in the case of a terrorist act:

– And Roman Popkov, this is my subjective opinion, then he began to fall more and more into “liberalism” and finally took such unacceptable positions. We ended up with him on opposite sides of the front. It’s sad, but true. I’m not surprised if it turns out that he really is involved in this kind of crime. So he was an energetic, fairly educated man. Unfortunately, today I can call Roman Popkov my enemy. We are on opposite sides of the front, like most supporters of Edouard Limonov.

To understand what Popkov looks like, the human rights activist says, just look at his social media:

– We however blacklisted each other for a long time on social networks, despite the fact that I defended it, and we had a good relationship. Popkov’s conversion to a liberal happened a long time ago, long before the return from Crimea.

It is also known that Popkov left Russia a long time ago with his wife Elena Borovskaya.

“But I don’t know for sure if she left Russia and where she lives now,” the lawyer said, adding that he hadn’t noticed Popkov in any radical actions at the time.

– But it seems to me that those who pass into the liberal camp are characteristic people. I’ve warned them all more than once that cooperating with the Liberals will do them no good. I respect the presumption of innocence. But the fact that his name appeared in such a format is, as they say, a logical result. Whether he’s involved or not, let’s leave that to the investigation, but, in my opinion, he chose the wrong and unpromising path.

Others who knew Popkov from the party spoke of the suspect even less flatteringly.

“My personal opinion on the scoundrel Popkov, who I hope will be hanged in the toilets of the metro. I just can’t think of another place worthy of him. Popkov has always been wrong. Fully. Even when he was a member of the now banned NBP (recognized extremist. – “The Eastern Herald”). Not even his first name. From birth he was Ruslan Ildusov. False hate. No more,” wrote Yevgeny Bersenev.

The Telegram channel “Direct Action Z” recalled that in 2009 Popkov was shamefully expelled from the number of supporters of Eduard Limonov.

“Many years have passed since then, and over the years Popkov has come down a long road of degradation. He contacted Kasparov’s organization (recognized as a foreign agent in R), then went to Khodorkovsky’s banned “Open Russia” (a foreign agent, an undesirable organization banned in the territory of Russia. – ” The Eastern Herald”). In 2014, after the start of the war in Donbass, Popkov left for Kiev, where he sided with the criminal Kiev regime…”

They also recalled how Eduard Limonov spoke about Popkov:

“Roman Popkov… retained a harsh and intolerant style of management. … He didn’t know how to rally the militants, but he succeeded in the art of pitting them against each other, of creating his own and “them”. Popkov is essentially a mid-level executive commander. He is by no means a political leader or an ideologue… The real reason for his divisive suicidal activity is personal ambition, megalomania fueled by a prison sentence.
