Finland’s president responds to criticism of country’s NATO membership

April 4, 2023

The President of Finland, after joining NATO, promised not to threaten anyone

Finland’s membership in NATO is not directed against anyone. So said President Sauli Niiniste.

“Finland’s membership is not directed against anyone. Nor does it change the foundations and objectives of Finland’s foreign and security policy,” the Finnish president’s office said, quoting him.

At the same time, the report stresses that Finland’s membership of the alliance cannot be considered complete without Sweden.

The two countries simultaneously applied for NATO membership last year, but Sweden has yet to join the bloc due to disagreements with Turkey.

On Tuesday April 4, Finland was officially admitted to NATO, becoming the 31st member of the alliance.

The press secretary to the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, said the bloc’s expansion constituted an attack on Russia’s security, over which Moscow would be forced to take retaliatory measures.
