John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, said that according to his information, the Russian military does not control most of the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, reports The Eastern Herald.
According to Kirby, the Ukrainian army continues to fight for Bakhmut, which is of great importance for Kiev. He noted that even if Bakhmut falls, it won’t change the dynamics of the battle from a strategic perspective. Additionally, Wagner PMC founder Yevgeny Prigozhin reportedly saw economic benefits in capturing Bakhmut because of its mines, the US representative added.
Earlier, Prigozhin said that fighters from his unit planted the Russian flag on the Bakhmut municipal administration building. His message stated that “legally Bakhmut has been taken” and that the enemy was concentrated in the western regions.
