Kremlin not discussing lifting moratorium on death penalty

– Published on:

Press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin does not raise the issue of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty. Earlier in the State Duma they again began to talk about the need to restore the death penalty.

“There is no post in the Kremlin. We are not discussing this issue in any way,” Peskov said.

The State Duma has repeatedly voiced proposals to scrap the moratorium on the death penalty. Deputy of United Russia Oleg Morozov declared RIA Novosti that the position of the Constitutional Court on the death penalty can be clarified “taking into account the evolution of the international situation”. According to him, the Constitution does not contain a direct ban on the death penalty.

“This decision depends on two things: on the opinion of society, which I am sure is in favor of it, and on the political will of those who will make this decision. Everything else is secondary and can be solved,” Morozov is sure.

Previously, the leader of the Just Russia – For the Truth party, Sergei Mironov, appealed to the President of the Constitutional Court, Valery Zorkin, asking him to reconsider his position on the moratorium. Mironov explained the need to postpone the imposition of the death penalty by the courts by the changed geopolitical situation, the “hostile actions of the collective West against Russia”, as well as the terrorist attacks and the killing of civilians, transmits CASS.

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Leonid Slutsky, also spoke out for the return of the death penalty. He said that after the terrorist attack that killed war correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky (Maxim Fomin), Russia should consider lifting the moratorium. The death penalty, according to the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, will be an adequate punishment for terrorists for “crimes against humanity”.

“Having joined the Council of Europe in 1996, we observed and continue to observe the moratorium on the death penalty. What happened to our comrade, Vladlen Tatarsky (Maxim Fomin), what is happening now on the fields of a special military operation, strikes at our hearts for us to reconsider this norm, ” estimate Slutsky TASS.

At the same time, at the end of 2022, the President of the Constitutional Court, Valery Zorkin, declared that the return of the death penalty is only possible through further amendments to the Constitution. The conditions for this, according to the judge, did not exist at the time. He also stressed that Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe does not affect the moratorium on the death penalty. In December 2022, Vladimir Putin said that the Constitutional Court’s position on the death penalty had not changed.
