British Parliament has opened an inquiry into Prime Minister Sunak

April 17, 2023

An investigation was opened on April 13, but no details were given.

Meanwhile, local media have already figured out what sparked such interest in the prime minister. According to Sunak’s spokesperson, the investigation was related to his wife Akshata Murthy’s involvement in a childcare business.

The fact is that all British MPs are required to register all gifts, contributions and donations received in the so-called “register of interests”. Additionally, they should report anything that could affect their actions, speech or voice.

Murthy’s business has benefited from changes in government funding policy for childcare announced in March, according to media reports. In this regard, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party has called for an investigation into Sunak.

If the Commissioner finds that the Prime Minister has violated the code of conduct, he can demand that he confess and apologize. Sunak will also have to clarify how he will avoid similar mistakes in the future. However, more serious penalties may be imposed if the commissioner considers the violations too serious. Among them – suspension of wages, suspension of work in the House of Representatives for a certain period, and even expulsion from the ranks of deputies.

The Prime Minister’s office has already assured that it is ready to help the parliament’s investigation in order to prove the transparency of the declaration.
