Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

DPR authorities refused to purchase heaters for Mariupol by winter

DPR authorities admitted that only 20% of Mariupol’s houses could connect to heating in winter, however, despite this, they refused to purchase heaters for city residents. About this in the Russian media program “Chronicles of the New World” said politician and organizer of the humanitarian mission “Warm Donbass” Roman Yuneman.

According to him, he raised the issue of heating with the authorities of the city and the DPR as a whole during his trip there in October 2022. The management of Mariupol said that it could only connect 20% of the houses to heating and that the rest risked being left without heating.

“I say, ‘Listen, you don’t have heat in the city, I’ve talked to people, and it looks like your people are going to freeze, some of them are even going to die of it, because they’re going to get sick. They say, “Well, yes, look, ***** (military operation) is coming.” I say, “What are you going to do about it?” They say: “We are trying to connect another 10,000 square meters to heating.” We sat, calculated, I said, “By the end of the year (by the end of the year (by December, by early January) you will have 20% of homes connected to the heating, and 80%?” They say, “We won’t have time,” the politician told the conversation.

According to Yuneman, his humanitarian mission bought 30,000 radiators for the city for a total of 60 million rubles. The money for this was raised through a fundraiser. But even with this number of heaters, as well as homes connected to heating, a third of the city remained “vulnerable”. According to the politician, he also offered the authorities to “distribute heaters”, but they refused to do so due to possible problems with reporting and finding funding.

“They say, ‘No, but how can we reflect that in the report? And where will we get the money … And these are budgets … “, – said Yuneman.

Nevertheless, he says, there was no increase in the price of heaters in the city at the onset of winter, and already in February their need ended. The politician notes that he has not heard of any cases of death due to the cold. “It turns out that in general, more or less, it was possible to save the city from freezing,” he summed up.

Russian media sent a request to the press office of the DPR leadership.

On March 19, 2023, during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Mariupol, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported that “all last year the city struggled to prepare for winter”, but by the new heating season, all destroyed objects in Mariupol will be connected to heating. According to him, we are talking about 1.8 thousand of these objects.
