Today, the British Ministry of Energy announced a plan to build a new power line between Britain and the Netherlands, to supply about one million and 800 thousand homes in Britain with electricity. The ministry said, in a statement: "The LionLink power line will be the world’s largest multi-use power line, boosting Britain’s energy supply and providing affordable, clean energy.". According to the plan, the power line will connect the electricity grid in Britain and the Netherlands to each other, and to offshore wind farms in the North Sea, to be ready for operation by the 2030s. British Energy Minister Grant Shapps described the agreement to establish the new line "by historical agreement", adding that it would give a boost to Britain’s energy security. He pointed out that the new power line is the largest of its kind in the world, and will provide enough electricity for more homes than the number of homes in the cities of Manchester and Birmingham together. Today, the British Energy Secretary will attend the North Sea Summit, a meeting of nine countries (Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and the Netherlands), in Ostend, Belgium, to discuss plans to establish offshore wind farms. Shapps is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between Britain and Denmark today, to achieve more cooperation on the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
