Biden has announced his participation in the 2024 presidential campaign – Reuters

April 25, 2023

News of the presidential campaign took many Democrats by surprise. They expected Biden to wait out the summer. But then his decision risks being overshadowed by the fight over the public debt ceiling. In addition, next month the President will travel abroad for summits in Japan and Australia, and in July he plans to appear at a NATO summit in Lithuania, where he can strengthen his self-promotion and increase its popularity with the electorate.

Recent studies have shown weak support for Biden. An NBC News poll showed that only 26% of Americans are ready to re-elect him. 70% are sure Biden should not run in the election. Among the Democrats, more than half are against the nomination of his candidacy.

In a CNN poll, Americans are slightly more confident in the president’s resolve, with 32% for and 67% against the nomination. An AP-NORC study found that support for Biden among Democrats has increased in recent months, with nearly half of Democrats backing his candidacy. 54% would like to see another Democratic candidate, but there is no alternative yet.
Basically, all respondents complain about the age of the current president. At 80, he lacks stamina and energy (as 67% of respondents think). More than half of those polled accused him of dishonesty, with the same number doubting his effective work with Congress.

Today, the successful fight against the pandemic is playing into Biden’s hands. The Biden administration considers the mass vaccination of citizens its great success. High inflation is falling. The other side of the coin is continued economic uncertainty, the loss of federal protection against abortion, and threats to democratic institutions.

Biden will face voter disapproval for his economic performance and Republican attacks on immigration. He is under judicial investigation for working with classified documents as vice president and earlier as a senator from Delaware. Experts are sure that the outgoing president will seek a second term, because during the first he did not have time to do everything that was planned.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to enter the race, offering a combative alternative to Trump. Democrats themselves think Trump and his team have a good chance of winning.

Biden ran twice unsuccessfully for the presidency until 2020. To defeat Trump, he mobilized young people, women and ethnic minorities, but also convinced independent voters opposed to his rival.
