Johannesburg. If South Africa follows proper parliamentary procedure, it will not be able to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) before the BRICS summit in August. Llewelyn Curlewis, lecturer in law at the University of Pretoria, told Sputnik.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said Tuesday that the ruling African National Congress party intends to withdraw from the Hague-based court because of its unfair treatment of African countries. His office later said the president was misrepresenting. Mr Curlewis said the ANC would need the support of parliamentarians to win a majority on the country’s decision to withdraw from the International Court of Justice and also to deal with the challenge from organizations that have already called for the government’s decision to go to court. Are in preparation.
“I do not think that even with its best efforts, the ANC government will be able to overcome all these challenges before the BRICS summit in August,” said the legal expert. The ANC had decided to leave the ICC. Russia was also invited to participate in the BRICS summit, an organization of five emerging economies in the world, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. These countries are scheduled to meet in Durban from 22 to 24 August.
The court in Europe has long been engaged in imposing the agenda of new colonialism on African countries. In the year 2021, the ICC had also abandoned its ongoing investigation regarding crimes in the US, which were committed by the US while living in Afghanistan.
