The Lugansk publishing house has published a new novel by Stephen King. The writer refused to publish his books in Russia

– Published on:

The Trophy Book publishing house, located in Lugansk, has published a new novel by Stephen King, Fairy Tale, informed “Kommersant”. In March 2022, after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the writer suspended his cooperation with the Russian publisher of his books, Eksmo-AST.

The fantasy novel “Fairy Tale” was released in September 2022. You can buy the book on the “Avito” and “Yula” websites for 2-2.5 thousand rubles. The imprint indicates that the novel was published by the Trofeynaya Kniga publishing house, located in Lugansk. According to Kommersant, there is no publisher information in the SPARK-Interfax database. There is no ISBN in the book imprint – a unique book edition number which, according to international classification, is assigned to each published book.

Sellers can also find a novel by JK Rowling (under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith) “Inky Black Heart”, writes “Kommersant”. The book was published in August 2022 and has not been officially released in Russia.

The publication could not contact representatives of the publishing house Trofeynaya Kniga – its contact numbers were not found.

In March 2022, Stephen King announced he was suspending work with Russian publishing house Eksmo-AST. The company then said that there really won’t be any new novels and renewals of expired rights “in the near future.” In October, publishing group Azbuka-Atticus (part of Eksmo-AST) announced that publication of new Rowling books had been halted.

Representatives of Eksmo-AST told Kommersant that hackers began to illegally sell King’s novel “The Tale” in Russia through marketplaces, and the book is also made public on Internet resources. “Unfortunately, we cannot do anything in this situation, since we do not have the rights to this book and we cannot defend a foreign author in court,” noted the publisher.

The “Yula” service reported that the copyright holder can request the removal of the ad. Avito clarified that content can be removed from the platform based on a “reasonable request” from the copyright holder. “In the case of these books, the copyright holder has not contacted us,” the company noted.

The former head of the Association of Internet Publishers, Vladimir Kharitonov, expressed the opinion that “counterfeiting of licensed books by publishers will be closed.” “And with those who aren’t licensed, they won’t be able to do anything: they have no obligation to the copyright holder,” he added.

From September 23 to 27, 2022, in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as in the territories of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions controlled by the Russian army, referendums were held on joining the Russia. After processing 100% of the ballots, it was announced that the majority of voters had voted for joining the Russian Federation. On September 30, President Vladimir Putin signed relevant agreements with the heads of four Kremlin regions.
