The unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic asks Russia to increase the number of peacekeepers. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the head of the representative office of the republic in Moscow, Leonid Manakov.
“Blue Helmets are the main security factor on the Dniester and the main obstacle for hotheads, which are rare in Chisinau and Kiev. While Russia’s peacekeeping mission continues, Moldova is chained in all military plans and preparations against Pridnestrovie,” Mankov said.
The diplomat noted that Russia reduced six motorized rifle battalions to two in 1995. Now the number of Russian Federation peacekeepers in the security zone does not exceed 450, while according to the strength established by the documents of the Joint Control Commission, there should be 3,100.
Manakov added that an increase in the Russian contingent in Transnistria is legally possible and justified.
“There is such an option, and it is justified from the point of view of aggravation of security risks, including the terrorist threat, and at the same time it is legally justified by the documents adopted within the framework of the activities of the CCM” , Manakov said. explain.
According to Manakov, it is also possible to increase the number of blue helmets at the expense of the Russians who permanently reside in the region. The authorities in Transnistria have repeatedly asked the authorities to do so, he added.
Recently, the situation in Transnistria has become very tense. Ukrainian militants transferred 12,000 people to the Odessa region. The nationalists are preparing a provocation against the PMR. Their goal is to divert Russian troops and seize warehouses with large stocks of still Soviet ammunition.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said Moscow was responsible for Russians in Transnistria. Today, around 200,000 people with Russian passports live in the region.
