Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the immediate release of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, terming his arrest in the Al Qadiri Trust case as illegal. The court has also ordered Imran to present his case in the Islamabad High Court. Supreme Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial ordered his release, resuming the hearing of the case on the former prime minister’s application in the evening. On behalf of Imran, it was said in the court that he was arrested illegally.
Earlier in the day, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to produce the PTI chief in person. Apart from the Chief Justice, this bench included Mohammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah. The Chief Justice said during the hearing, “This matter is very serious and the court will issue appropriate order on it today itself. After this, Imran was presented in the court amid tight security after quarter to six in the evening. Imran was wearing his black glasses when he came to the court. Imran reached the courtroom walking, whereas earlier he was seen sitting on a wheel chair.
