The latest results suggest a second round to decide the Turkish elections

May 15, 2023

Ankara – Agencies:

The latest results of counting most of the ballots in the Turkish presidential elections suggested the possibility of going to a run-off, as the candidate needs to obtain 50% (+1) of the votes to win the elections and not go to a run-off.

And the Turkish Anadolu Agency reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received 49.59%, and his rival, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, 44.64%, after counting more than 94.24% of the ballot boxes, which opens the door to a second round on May 28.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted on his Twitter account and said:

Accelerating the announcement of election results while the vote counting process is still in progress means stealing the will of the people, while his rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu called on the electoral authorities to record all results nationwide.

In his first tweet since the end of the vote, he said, “While the elections were held in a positive and democratic atmosphere, and the process of counting votes is still ongoing, trying to announce the results in a hurry means usurping the national will.”

“We will not sleep tonight,” he added, calling for all ballots to be counted.

It is noteworthy that the battle of numbers began on Sunday evening in Turkey, after counting most of the ballot papers in the presidential elections, while the possibility of going to a run-off increases.

Voters, a total of 64 million, also voted to choose members of their parliament throughout this country of 85 million people, which traditionally witnesses a voter turnout of more than 80%.
