The Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) is concerned about the measures taken by Russia against prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan and the trial judges who issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin and children’s mediator Maria Lvova-Belova. This is stated in the court message.
According to the document, the leadership of the Assembly is “seriously concerned” by reports of the measures taken by the Russian authorities against the prosecutor and the judges of the ICC, expresses its regret in this regard and calls on “all States to respect judicial independence of the ICC,” reports TASS. In addition, the Assembly expressed its support for the officials and staff of the ICC, stating that “to ensure the impartiality of the Court, including its judicial and of prosecution, is fundamental to the proper execution of its mandate”.
The Russian Interior Ministry previously put prosecutor Karim Khan and ICC judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aital and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez on the wanted list. In Russia, they are involved in a case under part 2 of article 301, part 1 of article 30, part 2 of article 360 of the Criminal Code on knowingly detaining illegal, as well as preparations for an attack on a representative of a foreign state enjoying international protection, in order to complicate international relations. Criminal proceedings have also been instituted against Karim Khan under Section 299 Part 2, Section 30 Part 1, Section 360 Part 2 of the Penal Code (“Criminal Liability of a knowingly innocent person, associated with the unlawful accusation of a person to commit a serious or particularly serious crime”).
On March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin and Lvova-Belova for illegally deporting Ukrainian children.
