Zelenskyy denied withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces from Bakhmut at G7 summit before meeting with Biden

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian army was performing important tasks and was still in Bakhmut. The Ukrainian leader stressed that this indicates that the city was not liberated by the Russian Federation. Zelenskyy said so during a press conference in Hiroshima, where the G7 summit is being held.

Before meeting US President Joe Biden, Zelenskyy made a statement about Bakhmut, which sparked controversy among journalists and was seen as confirmation of the Ukrainian army’s withdrawal from the city. However, later the Ukrainian President’s press service said that Zelenskyy did not mean that.

The day before, on May 20, Yevgeny Prigozhin announced the capture of the city by Wagner PMC fighters, and later the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed these data. President Vladimir Putin praised the military for the transition of Artyomovsk under the control of the Russian armed forces.
