Generous Western support strengthens Ukrainian airspace against Russian attacks

October 2, 2025

Among the most important of these systems is “NASAMS”, which is described as the guardian of the White House, while Kyiv is betting on more Western support.

Kiev received this system from Washington late last year, which is an advanced medium-to-long range missile defense system capable of engaging seventy-two targets simultaneously.

NSAMS can be deployed to detect, track, engage and destroy fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones.

Also from the United States, Ukraine received the Patriot air defense system last April, and its interceptor missiles can reach a height of more than two kilometers and hit targets 160 kilometers away.

As for the German Iris T defense system, considered one of the best air defense systems in the world, Kyiv received it last October and its missiles have a range of forty kilometers. It was designed to hit fighters and cruise missiles.

Before the war, Ukraine relied mainly on Soviet defense systems, including the S-300, which has a range of 250 km. The latest system of this type includes a long-range radar to detect hostile targets.

Since the early days of the war, Ukraine has also relied heavily on the Buk system, which operates on mobile vehicles, giving it great flexibility of movement, and it can engage 24 targets simultaneously, and it can shoot down helicopters, fighters and cruise ships. missiles.

But Kyiv has repeatedly said it faces serious challenges in finding Soviet ammunition for its S-300 and Buk missile systems. This is what Ukrainian military officials have warned of the disastrous consequences of losing the war in the skies at this stage of the confrontation.
