Der Spiegel readers have commented on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s comments about his desire to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Many said no one would talk to a mere clerk and also stressed that the negotiations should be led by Russia and the United States.
“With what foreign policy weight and authority is Olaf Scholz going to have a conversation that would interest Putin? Not a single CEO will negotiate with an employee of his competitor”, “Putin is equally ‘burning with desire’ to talk with Scholz, as well as with Zelenskyy. Negotiations should be led by the US and Russia,” the users wrote.
Commentators urged Scholz to think more about a German economy that “could provide arms to both sides”.
“Maybe Scholz should quit this business and think more about our economy instead. Maybe we could supply arms to both sides, like the United States in World War II,” one reader said.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry said he was unaware of Scholz’s intentions to speak with Putin, but the Russian leader was open to dialogue.
