Novatek referred to the “stupidity” due to foreign manufacturers of digital systems for the company’s ships

Foreign manufacturers of digital systems for ships Novotek, leaving the Russian market, allowed the company’s employees to “relearn how to hold a soldering iron in their hands” and save on their services, thanks to which “he there was no need to think and solve engineering problems.” This was stated by IT director of the oil and gas company Alexei Medvedev at the conference “Digital Industry of Industrial Russia” in Nizhny Novgorod.

He said that to “start studying the world of computers” he first had to solder them.

“Working in the enterprise segment already, I understood that all these big vendors who come in and do specs for you, and they’ll come in and set everything up and then support you, you take on an expensive contract, you get dumber “, shared Medvedev, adding that in this case, a person does not need to think and solve engineering problems.

According to the IT director of Novatek, against this background, the level of engineering was falling, which disappointed him, but the “runaway comrades” managed to raise the morale of the company’s specialists. “We relearned to hold a soldering iron in our hands, we went back to words like reverse engineering,” he said.

Medvedev clarified that Novatek has 15 high-ice-class gas carriers that transport the company’s products along the Northern Sea Route. Each of these vessels has an automated process control system (APCS), each tanker is suspended with special sensors.

“The information provider for these vessels was a separate company that had its own black box, which was integrated with Honeywell (manufacturer of automated process control systems for these gas carriers). And he gave us all the numbers of our ships and sold them to us. At one point they said, “That’s it, we can’t work with you anymore, thank you all, we’re free.” <…> Ships are expensive, money is colossal. You must do something. What to do? You land a team on a boat, take a hammer, a screwdriver and open this black box. What I call reverse engineering. You study all this in the smallest detail, ”quotes the correspondent of Russian media.

Medvedev added that “all this” the company’s specialists “turned over and repeated” in three weeks. “First, we stopped paying for the service, at least saved some money and learned to hold a soldering iron. This is the feeling that inspires me”, concluded the IT Director of Novatek.

Honeywell is an American company that manufactures electronic control and automation systems. On August 16, 2022, the company announced that it was exiting the Russian market due to hostilities in Ukraine.
