Submerged villages, state of emergency and missing persons. What is happening in the Kakhovskaya HPP region

– Published on:

Seven people disappeared in the town of Novaya Kakhovka, Kherson region, as a result of flooding after the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. One village was flooded, three other settlements were flooded “to the roof”. The region has declared a state of emergency. The Ukrainian side states that the water level will rise in the next few hours. Russian media has collected everything that is currently known about the consequences of the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.

Seven people are missing

At least seven people are missing following the floods, said Mayor of Nova Kakhovka Vladimir Leontiev. “Seven people we know for sure,” he answered when asked about the number of missing people.

Missing persons may be on the islands, explain Acting head of the Kherson region Volodymyr Saldo.

“They can be on the islands, and now the islands will have the opportunity to visit them. If someone stayed there, they will be expelled,” Saldo said.

Currently, one village in the Kherson region has been submerged, three others are almost completely flooded. “The village of Korsunka, except for the last street, is completely under water. Dnieper, Krynki, the Cossack camps, downstream, are flooded to the roof,” said Leontiev (quoted from “Interfax” ).

According to the official, the victims were avoided because the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station did not collapse immediately, but within five hours.

Emergency mode

In emergency departments reported TASS that an emergency regime has been introduced in the Kherson region. “According to the latest data, water flooded about 2.7 thousand houses in 15 settlements of the Kherson region. A total of 22,000 people lived there. Nearly 1.3 thousand people were evacuated,” the source said.

Libra said as many as 22,000 to 40,000 people could be in the disaster area. Leontiev said that 17 people were evacuated from the rooftops where they were fleeing the flood.

An emergency services source also told TASS that a cattle cemetery, a farm animal disposal pit and a graveyard were flooded. According to Saldo, partly flooded minefields. The acting governor noted that the military is “dealing” with this issue.

“Positive trend”

According to the authorities, the water level is gradually decreasing. At Novaya Kakhovka, it decreased by 0.5 m from the peak, where it exceeded 11 m, said Town’s mayor. “It’s a positive trend,” noted Leontiev.

The balance, meanwhile, informed that the water level in the Kakhovka reservoir has dropped by more than 3.5 m in the Energodar region.

On the right side

Meanwhile, on the right bank of the Dnieper, which is under Ukrainian control, around 2,000 houses were flooded. This was announced by the head of the Kherson regional military administration, Alexander Prokudin. “1,852 houses were flooded in the right bank region of Kherson (…) 1,457 people were evacuated,” he said (quoted by UNIAN).

According to Prokudin, 13 people asked for help last night, five of whom were Left Bank residents.

At the same time, he claims that in the next few days the water will arrive.

“The intensity of the floods is decreasing, but due to the significant destruction of the dam, the water will still come. According to our forecast, the water level will rise another meter in the next 20 hours,” Prokudin said. .

The dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station collapsed on the night of June 6. Russia claims that Ukrainian armed forces attacked the hydroelectric plant. Kyiv accuses Moscow of blowing up the dam.
