Digital versions of the dead… a new threat from artificial intelligence

– Published on:

According to a study by Aston College of Law at Queen’s University Belfast and the College of Law at Newcastle University in Britain, the so-called “ghostbot” (Ghost Bot) can be used to recreate the shape, voices and characteristics of the dead using hologram, deep fakeing and other techniques.

It means risking the reputation of the dead, as well as accusing them of doing what they did not do; This means their families can be blackmailed, which the United Nations has described as an “existential threat”.

Wrong wrong

Digital transformation and information security expert Ziyad Abdel-Tawab tells Sky News Arabia the truth about the possibility of cloning digital copies of the dead and its risks, saying:

“This cloning is done with deep forgery technology, which uses artificial intelligence to tamper with images, videos and sounds.” “Because of this technology, the US FBI said there was an approximately 322% increase in sextortion crimes in the United States in February 2023 compared to the previous year, due to deepfakes.” “This technology is developing rapidly, and therefore creating a digital copy of the dead is possible.” Some time ago news spread that a film production company had secured the rights to use the voice and likeness of Bruce Willis, the American action movie star, who suffers from illnesses that prevent him from speaking and moving, but his lawyer denied the case. “This case already exists, and through it, the voice of the Arab singer, Umm Kulthum, was reproduced, which allegedly prompted her family to take legal action for not obtaining their permission.” “So far, there are no laws on artificial intelligence, but the European Union is trying to enact laws by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.”

What laws to expect?

Asked about “expected or hoped-for laws that control artificial intelligence and its uses so that they do not violate the rights of people, living or dead? Abdel-Tawab replied:

“These laws can discuss the right to use the shapes and sounds of the dead, and legalize the rights to use them.” “It is necessary to discuss the right of the person to write clauses in the will before death, allowing his family to sell or use his voice and his image or not, and also to allow his voice and his image is in the public domain, and everyone’s right to use it, or set controls for that use, or prevent use of his or her voice and likeness altogether. » . “Using a person’s voice, form and features to express their personality, without permission, is tantamount to depriving them of a part of their being after death, which is similar to the use of organs after death .Does anyone have the right to use the organs of the deceased without his permission before his death and announcing the donation? “The question has religious, moral and legal consequences, so the use of all that concerns the dead requires legislation, and it may differ from country to country according to customs, traditions, customs and laws.”

“existential risk”

With the growing threats of artificial intelligence technologies, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has issued a warning of its dangers.

Expressing the magnitude of this danger, he noted that scientists and experts “have demanded action and declared that artificial intelligence is an existential threat to humanity, equal to the threat of nuclear war, and we must take these warnings seriously.”

At a press conference in New York on Monday, AntĂłnio Guterres presented the United Nations’ proposals on how to deal with artificial intelligence, announcing his intention to create a high-level advisory body modeled on the Agency International Atomic Energy.
