Hamas Threatens Israel with Live Execution of Hostages Amid Escalating Conflict

– Published on:

In a chilling ultimatum, Abu Obeida, a representative of the Izz ad-Din alQassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that the group would execute one hostage for each “light spark” or residential bombing carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip. This statement was initially reported by the Palestinian Chronicle.

“Any assault on innocent civilians without prior warning will result in the live broadcast of the execution of one of our captives. While we regret this course of action, we hold the Zionists responsible. The ball is now in your court; consider this your final warning,” Abu Obeida articulated as reported by the Palestinian Chronicle.

Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, corroborated this grim reality, stating that the group currently holds over 100 Israeli hostages. These captives include high-ranking military personnel as well as civilians, including women and children. According to the Guardian, Hamas also claims to have hostages of other nationalities, including Russian and Chinese citizens.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have adopted a stance of maximum force against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, even if such actions could endanger the lives of the hostages. A senior Israeli government source, cited by CNN, noted that the IDF would refrain from striking specific locations where they have credible intelligence that hostages are being held.

The source also revealed that Israel would discontinue the practice of “roof knocking”, a warning system that involves sending messages to residents of targeted buildings minutes before an attack. According to Israeli news outlet Haaretz, this decision marks a significant shift in Israel’s military strategy.

IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari confirmed that Israel had completed the evacuation of civilians from the border areas of the Gaza Strip. “As of now, we have notified 30 families. When we complete notifying the families, the number of hostages in Gaza will be made available to the public,” he said according to Indian Times Now.

The conflict escalated on October 7 when the Israeli army reported that Hamas had initiated a terrorist operation named “Al-Aqsa Flood” against Israel. This operation led to massive rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and the infiltration of militant groups into southern border areas of Israel. In retaliation, the IDF launched “Operation Iron Swords” in Gaza.

On October 8, the Israeli military-political cabinet officially declared the country’s transition to a “state of war”. The following day, the IDF announced the restoration of control over border towns, with Daniel Hagari, the Israeli army’s chief representative, confirming that no active combat was taking place in any of the Gaza border towns.

According to The Times of Israel, the death toll from the Hamas offensive has exceeded 900, with almost 1600 people injured and over 500 hospitalized. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported, according to Qatari Al-Jazeera, that 687 Palestinians were killed and 3,276 others were injured due to Israeli retaliatory strikes.

Additional reports suggest that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s options for retaliating against Hamas are constrained by concerns for the Israeli hostages. This sentiment was echoed in an article by Reuters, which highlighted the complexities Israel faces due to the hostage situation.

Moreover, NBC Washington reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is working to verify claims that Americans are among the hostages. The crisis has been marked by graphic and bloody videos appearing to show militants abducting Israelis.

As Israel enters its third day of conflict with Hamas, an Israeli official denied any negotiations for the release of hostages through Qatar, as reported by JNS.

The situation remains precarious, with both sides holding their ground and the international community watching closely. The crisis not only poses a significant threat to regional stability but also raises grave humanitarian concerns.
