Punjab faces severe cold and dense fog as temperatures hit new lows

Qadian, Punjab: Punjab is currently experiencing a significant drop in temperature, with the Meteorological Department predicting a further decline in the coming days. The state, known for its vibrant culture and agricultural prowess, is now facing a cold wave that has surpassed the chill of popular hill stations like Shimla and Mussoorie.

On Sunday, Bathinda in Punjab recorded a lower minimum temperature than Shimla, Mussoorie, and Darjeeling, marking a notable shift in the region’s climatic conditions. Bathinda’s minimum temperature was recorded at 6 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar experienced a slightly higher temperature of 6.2 degrees Celsius. In comparison, Mussoorie and Darjeeling recorded minimum temperatures of 6.4 and 6.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, with Shimla at 7.6 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Monday and Tuesday, indicating dense fog in the mornings and evenings across ten districts, including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, and Fatehgarh Sahib. This dense fog is expected to significantly reduce visibility, posing risks for vehicular movement.

In addition to the cold wave, Punjab is also grappling with dense fog, which has led to reduced visibility in several districts. The fog is particularly dense in the early morning hours, affecting daily life and transportation. The Meteorological Department has advised caution, especially for drivers, as the visibility is expected to be severely limited.

The cold wave has not only affected the minimum temperatures but also the maximum temperatures across the state. For instance, Samrala recorded the highest maximum temperature at 25.2 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar and Ludhiana experienced maximum temperatures of 20.7 and 23.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The weather conditions in Punjab are expected to remain challenging for the next few days, with the Meteorological Department predicting a further decline in temperatures. The dense fog and cold wave are likely to continue affecting daily life, agriculture, and transportation in the region.

Adding to the impact of the cold wave and dense fog in Punjab, the town of Qadian is facing its own set of challenges as it prepares for the Jalsa Salana 2023, scheduled from December 29 to 31. This annual gathering, significant to the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, attracts thousands from around the world for religious discussions, prayers, and community activities.

The dense fog enveloping Qadian has led to reduced visibility, potentially affecting the travel plans of attendees. Despite these challenges, the organizers are taking extra precautions for the safety and comfort of the participants, including enhanced lighting and guidance for safe travel. Participants are advised to prepare for the cold weather and potential travel disruptions. The resilience of the community and the spirit of the event are expected to prevail, as attendees and organizers adapt to these challenging weather conditions.
