Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria to launch naval group to clear off mines in the Black Sea

A mine countermeasures naval group of Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria will begin operating in the Black Sea in July. This was announced by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Defense Yaşar Güler.

“We jointly decided to sign a protocol between three countries in order to fight more effectively against the mine danger in the Black Sea by improving our existing close cooperation and coordination,” Guler said at a news conference in Istanbul with Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar and Bulgarian Deputy Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov, according to The Associated Press.

Previously, it was reported that the Ministries of Defense of Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria signed a memorandum on the creation of a mine action naval group in the Black Sea.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense noted that military actions in  Ukraine created negative conditions for security in the Black Sea. According to the memorandum, only Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Romania will be involved in combating the mine threat, According to TASS.
