Apple has officially launched two of its most ambitious health-focused features in India, bringing sleep apnea notifications to compatible Apple Watch models and clinically validated hearing tests to AirPods Pro users. The expansion marks a major step in Apple’s long-term push to turn everyday consumer devices into preventive healthcare tools.
The rollout comes after months of regulatory approvals and global testing, with India now joining Apple’s expanding list of supported countries for advanced health monitoring features. Apple confirmed the availability through its Indian newsroom announcement, highlighting the company’s broader effort to make wearable health tracking more accessible worldwide.
At the center of the update is the new sleep apnea notification system for Apple Watch users. The feature uses the watch’s accelerometer to monitor subtle wrist movements associated with interrupted breathing during sleep. Apple’s algorithm then analyzes “Breathing Disturbances” data over a 30-day period to identify patterns linked to moderate to severe sleep apnea. If consistent irregularities are detected, users receive a notification encouraging them to consult a healthcare professional.
Sleep apnea is considered one of the world’s most underdiagnosed health conditions. Medical experts warn that untreated cases can increase the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. Apple says more than one billion people globally may suffer from the condition, many without knowing it.

Alongside the Apple Watch update, Apple has introduced a clinically validated hearing test for compatible AirPods Pro models in India. The feature is based on pure-tone audiometry, a clinically recognized hearing assessment method widely used in hospitals and diagnostic centers. Using AirPods Pro paired with an iPhone or iPad, users can complete the hearing test from home in roughly five minutes.
Once the test is complete, the Health app provides users with a detailed hearing profile, including hearing loss levels for each ear, classifications, and an audiogram that can be shared with healthcare providers. Apple says the feature was designed to help users identify early signs of hearing loss before symptoms become severe.
Apple’s Vice President of Health, Sumbul Desai, said the company believes technology should empower users to detect health conditions they may not even realize they have. The company increasingly sees its wearables division as part of a broader preventive healthcare ecosystem rather than simply a hardware business.
The India expansion is particularly significant because it demonstrates Apple’s growing confidence in the country’s healthcare technology market. India has one of the world’s largest populations affected by sleep disorders and hearing-related conditions, yet access to specialized diagnostic services remains uneven outside major urban centers.
By turning devices like the Apple Watch and AirPods Pro into screening tools, Apple is positioning itself at the intersection of healthcare and consumer electronics. Analysts believe this strategy could strengthen Apple’s premium ecosystem advantage at a time when smartphone innovation alone is no longer enough to drive major upgrade cycles.
The expansion also intensifies competition in wearable health technology. Companies including Samsung and Google have invested heavily in sleep tracking, ECG monitoring, and wellness features, but Apple continues to differentiate itself through deeper hardware-software integration and clinical validation efforts.
Apple has steadily expanded health capabilities across its devices in recent years, adding features such as ECG monitoring, fall detection, irregular rhythm notifications, and temperature sensing. The company now appears to be moving further into regulated medical technology territory, an area that could eventually redefine how consumers interact with healthcare systems.
For India, the rollout could be especially impactful. Millions of users who already wear Apple Watches or AirPods daily may now gain access to early warning signs for conditions that often remain undetected for years. Instead of waiting for severe symptoms to appear, users can receive preliminary insights directly from devices already attached to their wrists or ears.
The launch also reinforces how Apple increasingly markets health as one of its most valuable ecosystem features. While rivals compete over AI features and smartphone camera upgrades, Apple is betting that health monitoring could become the next major reason consumers remain locked into its ecosystem.
Apple says the features are available now through software updates for supported Apple Watch models and AirPods Pro devices in India.
