DALLAS — Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal as time expired gave Oklahoma a 27-24 win over top-ranked Texas on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl, ESPN reported. In 122 meetings of the rivalry, the Sooners had never beaten a No. 1 Texas team. The loss was the Longhorns’ first of the season, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Texas had won its first four games, including a 24-23 comeback win over Ohio State in September.
Texas led 17-7 at halftime, with touchdown passes from Arch Manning of 41 yards to Cam Coleman and 34 yards to Ryan Wingo. Oklahoma’s only first-half points came on a blocked punt, when Danny Okoye got a hand on the kick and Dakoda Fields recovered it in the end zone, USA Today reported. The Sooners finished with just 238 total yards.
The game turned in the fourth quarter. Lloyd Avant’s 2-yard run tied it at 17-17 and gave Oklahoma its first rushing touchdown since the Sept. 4 opener against UTEP. Then Sooners safety Peyton Bowen returned a Manning interception 42 yards for a touchdown, the quarterback’s first career pick-six, to make it 24-17 with 10:07 left. Manning answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive that tied the game at 24-24, Longhorns Wire reported, and Texas later missed a 53-yard field goal, CBS Sports reported.
Manning’s second interception, the first of Courtland Guillory’s Oklahoma career, came at the Sooners’ 39-yard line with 19 seconds left. Instead of playing for overtime, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer threw completions of 13 yards and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna III, and both plays were reviewed. Texas tried to ice Sandell with a timeout, and he made the kick anyway, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Mateer finished 18 of 26 for 155 yards without a turnover, NCAA.com reported.
Oklahoma, unranked entering the game, improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SEC and took back the Golden Hat trophy after two straight losses to Texas. It was the Sooners’ first win over a No. 1 team since beating Missouri 38-17 in 2007, FOX 4 reported. Texas is likely to lose its top ranking.
