A UN General Assembly draft resolution due to be voted on at a special session next week calls for an end to hostilities in Ukraine and the achievement of a peace guaranteeing “sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity” of Ukraine.
The General Assembly is expected to approve the resolution at its February 23 meeting, a day before the first anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The draft resolution calls on the UN and member states to support diplomatic efforts to achieve peace.
The document also calls on Russia to end attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and immediately withdraw its troops from the country.
General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, but they carry political weight because they reflect the opinion of the global community.
The General Assembly has already approved a number of resolutions expressing support for Ukraine and criticizing Russia’s military actions.
