The deepening rift between Western countries and Russia over the war in Ukraine prevented a consensus from being reached at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, with the two sides blaming each other for the crisis.
The final statement issued by India at the end of the meeting states that “the majority of the members (of the G20) strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed that it is causing enormous human suffering and exacerbating the weaknesses of the Mondial economy”.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said participants at the Delhi meeting failed to hammer out a joint statement because of “highly polarized views” on the war in Ukraine.
“On the issue that concerned the Ukrainian conflict, there were disagreements, differences between different parties,” Jaishankar told reporters. “We tried, but the gap between countries was too big.”
