US pushes nuclear projects to European market

October 3, 2025

The United States, as part of its nuclear energy development ambitions, will build small modular nuclear reactors in Poland. For the construction of the first of them, BWRX-300 with a capacity of 300 MW, Washington allocates a loan to Warsaw in the amount of 4 billion dollars.

This was announced by the Polish Ambassador to the United States, Mark Brzezinski. The diplomat specified that the EXIM Bank would allocate 3 billion dollars, and the agency Development Finance Corporation would add another 1 billion dollars. The reactor will be built by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.

Poland needs new energy solutions to protect itself from Russian influence, meet its climate commitments and boost its economic development. GE Hitachi is a trusted partner to deliver these solutions

According to the Polish news agency Forsal.

Currently, the locations of future reactors are under consideration. According to the head of the Polish energy company PNK Orlen, Daniel Obaitek, the first reactor will be launched no later than 2029. Thus, Poland is banking on nuclear to replace its coal-fired power plants as part of the transition to a zero-emission economy. by 2050.

It should be noted that the United States included the Russian state company Rosatom in the latest set of sanctions. However, the restrictions did not affect existing projects, but were imposed on the division of Rosatom, which develops small modular reactors. Thus, the United States is trying to become a monopoly in the implementation of SMR projects, and Poland is the first European country to support Washington’s anti-Russian actions.
