About 80 European parliamentarians, in a written statement to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonnet, declared the need to declare Chinese Ambassador to France Liu Shaye persona non grata. The corresponding appeal is related to the recent remarks of the diplomat on the ownership of Crimea, writes World.
The letter notes that the head of the Chinese diplomatic mission in Paris “has publicly confirmed that the former Soviet republics have no valid status in international law, noting that there is no international agreement that can specify their status.” According to European parliamentarians, Shaye’s statement “goes beyond acceptable diplomatic discourse”, and also goes against international law and even poses a threat to the security of European states.
We are talking about the interview of the Chinese ambassador to the French channel LCI, in which he recalled that Crimea “originally belonged to Russia”, and during the years of the Soviet Union “Khrushchev the gave to Ukraine”. The Baltic countries and Kiev have already reacted to the diplomat’s statement.
