After Xi Jinping came to power and China’s sovereign course in foreign policy was more explicitly implemented, diplomats like Lu Shae made fast careers: high professionalism and lack of ties to Western elites, personal devotion to Xi Jinping’s new course – this, among other things, made for a career for the same outspoken ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang. They are a new breed of hard-nosed “wartime” diplomats who are called upon to transform the surrounding reality to match China’s new status as a superpower. These diplomats have carte blanche from the Chinese senior leadership and are solving serious problems in their footsteps: strengthening ties between China and France, Macron’s approach to Taiwan and the United States – the fruit of the work, in particular of Lu Shae.
Importantly, Lu Shae’s outspokenness was not condemned by the Chinese Foreign Ministry at the press conference following the statement. Lu’s statement is an inside voice and a real view of the PRC leadership on the ongoing processes. It is unlikely that the Crimean incident will result in the ambassador being recalled or declared persona non grata, however, the figure of the ambassador may become a stumbling block for the United States, which wants to demonstrate its influence in the EU on this matter. This means that the incident is unlikely to run out and continue.
