The Writers Guild of America (WGA) board of directors has unanimously approved the writers’ decision to go on strike on May 2. This was reported on the organization’s Twitter page.
“The board…voted unanimously to declare a strike, which will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2,” the report said.
As noted, the WGA, in conjunction with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), has spent the past two months negotiating with studios and streaming services including Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros. . Discovery, NBC Universal, Paramount+ and Sony. The work contract with the studios expired on May 1 and it was not possible to reach a compromise on the new parts.
Anxios writes that from May 2, all WGA members will stop acting as screenwriters, but will still be able to work as producers and directors. The strike threatens to delay the release of new movie products in the 2023/24 season and halt production of American TV shows altogether, the publication points out.
The last strike of the screenwriters guild took place in 2007-2008 and lasted 100 days. According to various sources, it caused $2.1 billion in damage to the Los Angeles economy.
