The German-made PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers received by the Ukrainian army did not demonstrate their effectiveness in mud conditions. Soviet-made Pion artillery systems, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) used before receiving new equipment, proved to be better, writes The New York Times.
According to the publication, Kyiv received 14 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers from Germany and the Netherlands.
“Because of its claw-like metal tracks, Peony performs best in muddy conditions,” the article notes.
The article also says that last week the Ukrainian command decided to remove all German self-propelled guns from the combat zone due to their real uselessness. With possible shelling by Russian troops, they simply will not be able to leave the territory on their own.
“Until the weather improves, there will be no counter-offensive <…>the Cars will get stuck, and what will we do if the shooting starts?” Journalists quote the words of one of the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In addition, German technology requires careful handling. Otherwise, electronics can fail at any time, including the slightest exposure to moisture or dirt.
“Soldiers should wear special boots or slippers when going inside,” the publication noted.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised the Germans that he would monitor the use of equipment received from Germany by Kiev. According to him, Ukrainian troops should not use it to strike Russian territory.
