Ukraine’s entry into NATO at a time when the country is engaged in hostilities poses the risk of a Third World War, writes Bloomberg columnist Andreas Klut.
The journalist considers it fair to admit Ukraine into the alliance. Moreover, Hungary or Turkey could be excluded from NATO. But as the military conflict continues in Ukraine, discussions on the country’s entry into the alliance must be postponed. Klut states that the security guarantees expressed in the fifth article of the NATO charter cannot be provided to Kiev in today’s realities.
The day before, during a press conference in the Netherlands, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that his country wanted to receive a signal from NATO that it would be accepted into the alliance after the end of the conflict.
In April, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited Kiev. During his visit, he invited Zelenskyy to the NATO summit in Vilnius this summer and promised that the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the alliance would be on the agenda.
