On May 9, Latvian police opened four criminal cases after people laid flowers at dismantled memorials to Soviet soldiers. They were also accused of displaying forbidden symbols, in particular St. George’s ribbons.
A total of 17 people were arrested, 23 administrative cases and four criminal cases were initiated, reports RIA Novosti in reference to the Latvian police.
Earlier, the Latvian Seimas press service informed the agency that the parliament had banned public events in honor of Victory Day. Processions, celebrations, pickets and other public events have been banned.
In March this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the removal of Russian ambassadors to Latvia and Lithuania from their posts.
