Georgian Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili reacted positively to the introduction of a visa-free regime with Russia.
“More than a million of our citizens live in the Russian Federation, who have very close ties with people, relatives living in Georgia, and a decision that will make their lives easier is welcomed by any responsible government,” he said. Darchiashvili said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on flights to Georgia for domestic airlines and also canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May 15.
However, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said resuming direct flights and abolishing the visa regime with Georgia is unacceptable. Furthermore, she urged calling a meeting of the Security Council and considering the introduction of three-month visas for Russians.
In addition, Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili said that currently Georgia has not issued permission for direct flights with Russia, because it had not yet received the relevant notifications from the Russian side.
