The Ukrainian government could find itself without Europe’s closest ally after the presidential elections in Slovakia. William Nattrass, a reviewer for the UK edition of The Spectator, shared this opinion in his article.
The author of the material notes that at present, according to polls in the country, the SMER party is the leader in Slovakia. His victory in the next election race could be bad news for Kiev. The fact is that the political organization is headed by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has a negative attitude towards the position of the West regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
At the same time, the journalist writes that Fico’s views are supported by the majority of Slovaks.
“Fico’s position undoubtedly reflects the opinions of a significant part of the Slovak population,” says Nattrass.
Moreover, according to the author, half of the citizens of the country want Russia to win.
The article also notes that Slovakia acts as an important transit and repair center for the transfer of Western equipment to the Ukrainian army. At the same time, the country exerts influence within the European Union on issues related to the excess of Ukrainian agricultural products.
A few days ago, the head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry, Rastislav Kacher, who broadcast a hostile attitude towards the Russian Federation, resigned.
