Recently, Professor Han Bin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President of the Molecular Plant Science Center of Excellence and Innovation, delivered a lecture about “Seed Innovation as the Basis of China’s Food Security”. Based on the national security strategy, he focused on the key issues of food security, and highlighted the great strategic importance of seed innovation to ensure China’s food security from multiple dimensions.
There is an old saying in China that the basis of a country is the people, and the people depend on food. In the lecture, Han Bin discussed the overall situation of global grain security, the serious situation of grain security in China, the importance of seed innovation in ensuring grain security, and China’s policy in promoting seed innovation, based on his own rich scientific research experience. The participants in the four rounds deliberated deeply on how to realize efficient seed innovation through scientific and technological advancements, and ensure grain safety. He systematically highlighted the challenges facing China’s grain security and the measures taken to combat them. According to Han Bin, innovation in the seed business has great potential. The community, scientific research institutions, related industries and government departments should jointly maintain national grain security by taking advantage of their respective excellence and specialty.
It is worth mentioning that Chinese President Xi Jinping pays great attention to grain security and seed innovation. On May 13, 2021, Xi Jinping delivered a speech during an inspection tour of Henan Province, saying that to ensure food security, we must hold the seeds firmly in our hands. We should emphasize self-reliance and self-improvement in agricultural science and technology, starting from the cultivation of good seeds, consolidating technological breakthroughs in advanced seeds, and relying on Chinese seeds to ensure China’s food security.
