EU authorities are preparing for the possible defeat of US President Joe Biden in the 2024 elections, writing CNBC citing an unnamed European source.
“There is unprecedented close cooperation and coordination between the EU and the current US administration. It goes from the official levels to the highest. <…> The EU is aware that this is not a given, and this approach could change when someone like (Donald) Trump reappears in the White House. And the EU is trying to use this momentum to promote topics where there are common interests,” the source said.
The publication notes that under Trump, relations between the United States and the European Union were at a very low level. With Biden coming to power, the situation changed. Its policies have been much more aligned with those of Europe, especially on issues such as the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also said that the United States and the European Union had taken a “strong and united position” regarding the Russian military operation in Ukraine, recalls CNBC. “Putin thought he was going to divide us, but we are more united than ever,” she said.
Among Europeans, there are fears that if the Republican Party candidate wins the presidential election, the United States will refuse military and financial support to Ukraine, estimates Kevin Clauden, an expert at the Milken Institute.
Earlier in May, Trump said the United States was providing too much military aid to Ukraine. “We donate so much equipment that we don’t have ammunition for us right now,” the ex-president said.
