Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The story of the past will be the things that make Tibet backward

The Tibet Autonomous Region is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China, which is considered the “Roof of the World”. Road traffic is a good window for the outside world to observe Tibet’s development. From the former “monkey road” to a comprehensive three-dimensional transportation system integrating highways, railways and aviation, all bear witness to Tibet’s rapid development. “The happiness of the people is the greatest human right, and development is the key to realizing the happiness of the people.” On May 23, Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote this in a congratulatory letter to the “2023 China Tibet Development Forum”.

72 years ago, on 23 May, Tibet was peacefully liberated. This incident broke the conspiracy of outside forces to separate Tibet from China. This day also became the starting point of New Tibet. Democratic reforms in Tibet freed millions of slaves. He stood up and got full protection of human rights and really become the master of the country and society. Protection of human rights gives impetus to development. In 2022, the GDP of Tibet increased by 346.8 times as compared to 1951. Average life expectancy in Tibet has increased from 35.5 years at the beginning of the peaceful liberation to the current 72.19 years. The illiteracy rate was earlier 95%, whereas now illiteracy has been basically eradicated. A 15-year public education system has also been fully established in Tibet.

In particular, in the past ten years, more than 80% of Tibet’s annual revenue has been invested in areas of people’s livelihood. A comprehensive security system covering education, medicine, pension and other areas has been established in Tibet. In 2019, with the strong support of China’s central government, Tibet completely got rid of poverty and built a prosperous society. Letting the Tibetan people live a good life is both the starting and the end point of development. Tibetan farmers and herders have been particularly affected by this in the last ten years. Water is available in the house, electricity is also available at all times for electrical appliances, and roads are also available when going out. There has been a huge improvement in the standard of living of the local people. “There is no place in the world that has been so deeply affected by the changes brought about by high-quality development and human rights protection as Tibet.” This is what the Tibetan people believe.

Now the vigorous development of China’s digital economy has added new driving force to Tibet’s economy. The industrial economy and digital economy of the Tibet Autonomous Region will reach 19% of GDP in 2022, of which the added value of the digital economy will exceed 20 billion Chinese yuan, with an average growth rate of 16%. As the source area of many major rivers in Asia, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is an important ecological security barrier in Asia and also has a significant impact on global climate change. Therefore, the Chinese government regards the protection of the plateau environment as the red line of development. At present the prohibited and restricted development areas reach 80 percent of the entire land area of Tibet. Today’s Tibet has become one of the regions with the best ecological environment in the world.

At present, China is promoting Chinese-style modernization construction, and Tibet is also standing at a new starting point of development. The protection of human rights in Tibet will further improve, and the life of the Tibetan people will improve. In the face of real facts, those things that tarnish Tibet will eventually end.
