How the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station dam will affect military operations

– Published on:

On the night of June 6, the Russian authorities in the Kherson region announced the partial destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station as a result of shelling. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the dam. Russian media learned how, according to war correspondents and experts, the partial destruction of the dam could affect the course of hostilities.

The main thing about the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, the evacuation and the reaction of the authorities Russian media told here.

Alexander Kots, war correspondent (in conversation with Russian media)

It is difficult to imagine (how floods can affect the course of hostilities). It is clear that the activity on the section of the Dnieper in the Kherson region will drop sharply, because now the islands between the right and left banks are completely flooded – the dachas and buildings on them are already under the water.

As a result, from the positions occupied by the enemy along the right bank on the islands, they were forced to evacuate their units, in the same way as they evacuated Russian army units from the islands in order to do not lose people in flooded areas.

As for the offensive prospects, it is understandable that the destruction of the dam can continue, because the volume of water is gigantic, and so far only the upper ridge has been destroyed. If there is further destruction, the Dnieper will inevitably become shallow upstream, respectively, of the Kakhovka reservoir.

In terms of the offensive danger of the enemy, the Zaporizhzhia part of this tank, adjacent to Energodar, is of particular interest. Of course, the decrease in the depth of the reservoir in this particular place will benefit Kiev, since the transfer of assault units to our shore will be simplified.

Officials say the destruction could also affect the North Crimean Canal. Indeed, the volume of water entering it from the Dnieper is likely to decrease with the continued destruction of the dam.

Over the past year, the Ukrainian army has regularly and systematically attacked the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and dam. I don’t know why they did it, maybe they thought there were units there, maybe bad shots, but at the hydroelectric plant, at the dam, they inflicted more ‘a dozen blows, and if you stay in one place for a long time you hammer, it is clear that at some point the destruction will begin. In other words, whether it was an intentional bombing by Ukraine or an element of regular bombing, during which the dam suffered significant damage that was superimposed on the previous damage, is no longer so important, the consequences are important.

On the situation with the weakening of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. So far, briefly (information from the field has not yet arrived, yesterday – everything was very calm, no one expected anything).

First of all. The weakening is clearly of pre-planned deliberateness and features prominently in the enemy’s offensive plans.

Second. So far, the following main objectives are visible:

“wash” our troops from the left bank of the Dnieper under Novaya Kakhovka. Including all defensive structures, all minefields will be “washed away”, all field ammunition depots will be flooded, all property that they will not have time to load and remove will be completely or partially destroyed , and there will be many, unfortunately; create conditions for the capture of the Kinburn Spit, which will also be partially flooded and turned into an island by the floods. If the enemy succeeds in capturing the Kinburn Spit now, he will unlock the port of Ochakov and the mouth of the Dnieper. It will be extremely difficult to regain the scythe, in the current conditions it is practically impossible at all; create a threat (in a week or two) to force the Dnieper in a wide area above Novaya Kakhovka – after a very significant drop in the level of the reservoir and the same narrowing of the current water barrier. They plan to force or not – “grandmother said in half.” But the command of the RF armed forces will without fail have to transfer additional reserves to this sector, otherwise they will definitely force and create a bridgehead.

Kakhovskaya HPP and the dam are all. The breakthrough (occurred) due to multiple enemy artillery hits. There was no undermining. Even after the breakthrough (the Ukrainians) did not stop hitting the concrete floor.

What is the result: the battalion commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was in this direction, consciously gave the order to destroy the dam, thereby saving the lives of his personnel. The soldiers of the “Kyiv regime” are already being evacuated from the islands along the Dnieper, Kherson is flooded. The offensive turns into a retreat in that direction.

A lot of young guys from both sides will stay alive. The dam is nothing, life is everything!

Our main positions were built in the depths of the territory in advance (taking into account only the possible weakening of the APU of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which was discussed even during the withdrawal from Kherson), and not on the shore, so they wouldn’t suffer much.

Here the calculation of our staff officers was fully justified, let me remind you that last year they were criticized for building their main positions in the depths of the territory, and not on the coast it -even. If they were attached as close to shore as possible, some of that effort would now fly up the pipe.

But part of the infield and minefields will obviously suffer, so additional measures will have to be taken to equip the defense area once the water flow has stabilized and clarifications have been obtained. on potential areas where the enemy may attempt to drop the DRG. But these are solvable tasks, although they will require additional time and resources.
