Windhoek: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said it is important for India and countries like Namibia to work together for cooperation on the global stage amid a “very challenging” international situation arising out of factors such as debt crisis with high interest rates and tense geopolitical situations. It’s time to do it. Jaishankar made the remarks at the conclusion of the first Joint Cooperation Commission meeting between India and Namibia here along with Namibian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. During the meeting, the two sides discussed the framework for the growing bilateral partnership, covering areas such as energy, infrastructure, wildlife conservation, trade and investment, food security, digital, capacity building, health, defense and art, culture, heritage, people-to-people ties, among others. Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting, “Delighted to conclude the first Joint Cooperation Commission meeting between India and Namibia.” He said that Namibia has a very special place in the hearts and minds of Indians. “And that is why we supported Namibian independence and we are very happy to see Namibia take its rightful place in the community of nations and become a proud custodian of the international order,” he said in his opening address. The External Affairs Minister said, ‘When you are celebrating the 33rd anniversary of your independence, let me tell you that we share your pride and appreciate your progress and your success.’ He said that when both the countries meeting, they cannot remain oblivious to the world and the challenges that the international system is facing in various matters.
Jaishankar said that these challenges affect people’s lives. He said that the Global South is particularly suffering from what is happening in the world for the last three or four years. The post-pandemic debt crisis with high interest rates, tense geopolitical conditions, as well as the ecological, economic and social costs of climate change pose health, economic and social challenges, he said. I think all of these together have actually created a very challenging international situation today.’ He said, ‘Therefore it is time for countries like ours to work together for cooperation on the international stage. ”
Jaishankar also discussed expanding bilateral ties in the fields of energy, green hydrogen, transport and connectivity, digital, pharmaceuticals, food security, science and technology and culture. He said that about 400 Indian companies are operating in Namibia. “We will certainly again see more investments, more partnerships, stronger skills partnerships by India again,” he said. Jaishankar said he was confident that “our partnership is entering a new era today” and that Looking forward to working closely with the Deputy Chief Minister on this. EAM also participated in the inauguration of India-Namibia Center of Excellence in Information Technology in Windhoek.
