In 1994, a resolution was passed at the 49th United Nations General Assembly, in which it was decided to designate June 17 every year as “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” from the year 1995. It aims to increase people’s awareness of desertification and drought and to instill in people a sense of responsibility and urgency in combating desertification.
Desertification, which has been called “cancer of the earth”, threatens the existence and development of two-thirds of countries and regions.
