United Nations: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously adopted a draft resolution moved by India to set up a memorial wall at the UN Headquarters in honor of fallen peacekeepers. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj on Wednesday presented a draft resolution titled ‘Memorial Wall for Fallen United Nations Peacekeepers’ at the UNGA. The resolution, co-sponsored by nearly 190 member countries of the world body, was passed at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on his first official state visit to the US next week. During this, he will also participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held at the United Nations Headquarters on 21 June.

The resolution welcomes the initiative of Member States to establish a memorial wall in memory of fallen peacekeepers at a suitable and important place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and to consider the process associated with it, in which the names of the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice are named. Also to include. Presenting the resolution, Kamboj said the memorial wall would be a testimony to the importance the United Nations attaches to its peacekeeping operations. He said that this memorial wall would not only remind people of the sacrifices of the martyrs, but would also serve as a constant reminder of the real price paid for our decisions. The resolution was introduced by 18 countries including India, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Jordan, Nepal, Rwanda and the US.

Prime Minister Modi thanked all the member states for supporting the resolution moved by India. He tweeted that I am glad that the resolution to set up a new memorial wall for martyred peacekeepers has been passed in the United Nations General Assembly. A record 190 countries co-sponsored the resolution. Grateful to all for the support. India is currently the third largest contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Over 6,000 Indian soldiers and police personnel are part of UN peacekeeping operations in Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Gulf region and Western Sahara.

So far 177 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice during peacekeeping missions. This number of martyred peacekeepers is more than any other country. Kamboj said that peacekeepers are not born. They are prepared in the spirit of sacrifice. Their unwavering commitment and selfless work paves the way for building a world where peace must triumph over war. In the proposal, a provision has been made to complete the construction of the memorial wall within three years from the adoption of its draft. Earlier, in 2015, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations had introduced a virtual memorial wall in honor of Indian peacekeepers who made the supreme sacrifice during peacekeeping operations. This initiative further paved the way for the construction of the ‘Memorial Wall for Fallen United Nations Peacekeepers’.
