Putin simplified obtaining a residence permit for foreigners participating in the special operation

Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law aimed at streamlining the process of obtaining a residence permit in Russia for foreigners who have entered into service contracts with the Russian Armed Forces during special operations. The official document outlining these changes has been published on the legal information portal of the country.

Under the new law, foreign nationals who sign a one-year service contract will be eligible for simplified procedures to obtain a residence permit. This provision extends to family members, including in cases of the servicemember’s death.

In addition, highly skilled individuals from other countries who are already working in Russia will now have the opportunity to apply for an unlimited residence permit. This provision recognizes the valuable contributions made by foreign professionals in various sectors of the country’s workforce.

It is worth noting that previously, foreign nationals who signed service contracts with the Russian military were granted the possibility of obtaining Russian citizenship through a simplified process. This measure was introduced by President Putin in September of the previous year. Spouses and children of these foreign servicemembers were also eligible to apply for Russian passports through simplified procedures. Subsequently, a decree was signed by President Putin outlining the specific procedures for the service of foreign citizens in the Russian Armed Forces.

The recent law signed by President Putin further strengthens the opportunities available for foreign nationals involved in special operations to establish a long-term presence in Russia. By facilitating the residence permit process, the government aims to recognize and appreciate the commitment and contributions of these individuals in serving the country’s defense and security interests.

The changes in the law reflect Russia’s ongoing efforts to create a more favorable environment for foreign nationals, including highly skilled professionals, who choose to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. As Russia continues to engage with the international community, the simplified residence permit process for foreign servicemembers and skilled individuals is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and attracting global talent.

The new law underscores President Putin’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with foreign personnel while prioritizing national security and defense. As the provisions of this law come into effect, foreign nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces can benefit from more streamlined procedures for obtaining a residence permit, providing them with a stable legal status during their service and beyond.

As Russia welcomes foreign individuals who actively contribute to its strategic objectives, the implementation of this law is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s military and professional landscape, fostering international cooperation and enriching cultural diversity within its borders.
